Tiny cube of doom

I recently discovered one item that escaped my Great Cupboard Cleanout– beef bouillon cubes. I do not know why this is even in my pantry, as I have no recollection of a) ever using it and b) ever using a recipe that requires it.
As I stood poised over the trash can, feeling the sting of guilt I get whenever I throw out wasted food, I took a closer look at the tiny jar, just to see if maybe it would be worth saving for something, anything. My eyes then fell upon the ingredients:
salt, hydrolyzed soy protein, sugar, corn syrup solids, natural flavors, monosodium glutamte, onion powder, caramel color, partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil, spices, silicon dioxide, garlic powder
MSG? AND partially hydrogenated oil? Salt is the main ingredient? Followed by sugar in a close third? I had no idea it was so awful. My apologies if you do actually use bouillon cubes, but I mean really. This stuff seems toxic. And for someone who considers themselves fairly distanced from preservatives and processed food, this kind of kicked me in the head. Hence the random blog post about it.

  1. What's a quick way to make beef broth then? I often (usually) used the beef and chicken bouillon powder, and then lots of fresh ingredients in my soups.

  2. @Country Girl: lol that is exciting! I can't wait until we are able to keep chickens so we can do that, too.

    @Mimsie: I don't think there's really any 'quick' way to make broth 😦 … but there are some pretty good store-bought alternatives! Instead of bouillon, I buy low-salt, organic broth. My favorite brand is Pacific Natural Foods (http://www.pacificfoods.com/our-foods/broths). I would just find a brand that fits your budget and has an ingredient list that resembles what you would actually make broth out of at home, instead of a mad scientist's experiment. 🙂
