My Green Thumb Girl

My Green Thumb Girl

I was using old magazines and newspapers to pack up glassware. My girl slipped a seed catalog out of the mix and settled in for a good read. The gardening bug hits early around here! 🙂

Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diapers

This post is the first in a little series I am doing on cloth diapers. Later, I will be writing about ‘Where to Start? Choosing Style, Price Range, Brand’ and ‘Set-up and Accessories- Detergent, Wipes, Wet bag, and Storage,’ as well as posting a few […]

Children are Not Dogs

Children are Not Dogs

This has nothing to do with homesteading or leading the simple life. It has everything to do with the inexcusable lack of decency that plagues today’s society. This is my response to America’s Funniest Videos, callous news stories, crass reality television, and inappropriate Facebook posts. I cannot keep quiet any longer.

Babies and children are humans, not dolls, not monkeys, not dogs. They are not here for our entertainment. They feel sadness and fear just like everyone else. Their failures are not meant to amuse us, videotaped and publicized for our pleasure. Watching them flinch at loud noises, get knocked down by large pets, fall over while learning to walk- it is not funny. Our little ones are feeling and seeing and experiencing everything for the first time. Their emotions and reactions are similar to ours, only tenfold. Everything is louder and more jarring, brighter and unfamiliar.
Would you want someone to record you taking a bath, naked and unaware, then post it on Facebook?
No, because it’s embarrassing and inappropriate.
Would you like it if everyone laughed hysterically when you stubbed your toe or hit your funny bone?
No, because it’s rude and mean.
When sitting down to dinner with family, do you usually talk about your poops and farts?
No, because that’s gross and inappropriate.
Some would argue “but it’s different, they’re just kids.” Why is it different? Because they don’t know enough to be embarrassed yet? Because they’re too innocent to realize that naked pictures and videos are inappropriate (and provocation for pedophiles)?
Decency and modesty are learned traits that are disappearing from our world at an alarming rate. It is our job as parents to protect our children’s dignity and to teach them how to live with integrity. They rely entirely on us for their guidance and security; we cannot let them down.  Please spread the word and don’t stand by silently anymore.

Happy New Year’s Eve!

Happy New Year’s Eve!

I’m not really into New Year’s. I don’t do the whole resolution thing, I don’t watch the ball drop (I used to, before rappers and MTV/reality TV stars took over), and I don’t typically do the ‘year in review.’ But this year is different. This […]

Life goes on

Life goes on

My days are beginning to find a rhythm. Baby is up at around the same time each morning, goes to bed around the same time each night. As for naps, well, that is a different story entirely. Our darling little daughter does not like naps. […]

Deo Gratias

Deo Gratias

Two months ago, (very) early on a Saturday morning, we welcomed our first child into the world.

My capacity for love is greater than I ever thought possible; each day I love our baby more and more. She is teaching us a great deal about ourselves, our marriage, and our lives. We are stronger than ever, and the love that bound us under God six years ago is continuing to grow within this brilliant little being. Motherhood is everything and nothing like I imagined. It is tiring and amazing and exactly where I want to be.
“There is in all this cold and hollow world no fount of deep, strong, deathless love, save that within a mother’s heart.” -Felicia Hemans
